Growing Zones
The brilliant flowers of the Sunset Clematis allow you to enjoy the vibrant shades of a sunset all day. This Clematis hybrid features 8-petaled flowers that measure 4 to 6 inches across and have a deep reddish-plum hue with purple accents. The petals have a satin finish and velvety texture. Soft yellow-hued anthers provide additional color. This Clematis is a free-flowering variety that blooms in May through June and again in September. Pointed green foliage fills in the areas between blooms.
The reaching vines of Clematis ‘Sunset’ need an arbor or trellis for support. Plant this vining perennial along a fence, shed, or structure the vines can climb. Use this flowering plant to create a privacy screen or focal point in the landscape. This plant is deer and rabbit resistant, so it is a good pick for rural areas with large animal populations. Grow the Sunset Clematis in zones 4 through 9.
Sunset Clematis Care
Plant the Sunset Clematis in full sun to partial shade. The ideal planting site will expose the upper portion of the plant to full sun while shading the roots. The soil should have a high organic content and be moist but well drained. Clematis prefers damp but not overly wet conditions. Water weekly and apply a thick layer of mulch to retain moisture and further protect the roots.
Prune in late winter or early spring. Trim above a set of buds, removing old or leggy growth and creating a full and dense form.
Sunset Clematis Spacing
The Sunset Clematis reaches 6 to 10 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide. Space plants 1 to 2 feet apart when creating a continuous planting. One plant can grow in a 16-inch wide container.
