This mid to late seasons blueberry produces an abundance of dime-size delicious berries. Its white and pink bell-shaped flowers will add beauty to your landscape in the spring and its leaves turn a bright shade of red in the fall. Even if you don’t like the taste of blueberries, this plant will add ornamental value to your landscape.
This plant’s compact rounded form makes it a great choice for a container garden. It can also be used in a mixed shrub or perennial border, to create a low hedge or as an accent plant. This plant is deciduous in general, but the leaves may remain through the winter in warmer climates. Vaccinium corymbosum 'Sunshine Blue' will reach between 3 and 4 feet tall and wide in USDA plant hardiness zones 5 to 10.
Sunshine Blue Blueberry Care
Sunshine Blue Blueberry prefers to grow in soil with a pH of 6.5 or lower in a location with full to partially sunny conditions. Use an acidic potting soil created for azaleas, camellias and rhododendrons when growing this plant in a container garden. Remove any crossed or broken branches in the spring before new growth begins. You’ll have to cover the blueberries as they begin to ripen, or hungry songbirds will eat them before you harvest them for yourself.
Sunshine Blue Blueberry Spacing
Space individual plants 6 to 8 feet apart so you’ll have room to walk around them when harvesting the berries. This variety is self-fruiting but will be more productive when another blueberry variety is planted nearby.
