Superbena Peachy Keen is an improved verbena hybrid in the Royale series of Superbena. The light apricot, peachy cream tones blend beautifully with the medium green foliage, producing miniature bouquets up to 3 inches across on each upright stem. A mounding, slightly trailing plant, it makes a wonderful display massed out in your landscape, borders, edgings and garden beds, or combined with brightly colored flowers of other sun to light shade annuals.
Verbena is native to the Americas and Asia where it grows as a semi-woody shrub in Zones 8a through 11b. It is very heat tolerant, and keeps blooming even during the hottest months of summer in all regions. Zones 2-7 can grow verbena as an annual, bringing that beautiful color and form into spring to fall gardens with ease. Superbenas are especially bred to resist plant diseases like powdery mildew making these truly an easy care annual for your garden.
Superbena® Peachy Keen Verbena Care
Although verbenas are drought tolerant, you should develop a regular regimen for watering during dry hot months to achieve the best performance. Plant in loose well draining soil with lots of composted organic material and add a slow release fertilizer for early growth and flowering. Container plants need to be fertilized more often with a water soluble fertilizer every couple of weeks or as needed to maintain the long continuous bloom that this annual is famous for. Soil pH preferred is 5.8 to 6.2, slightly acidic although it will tolerate some variance.
Deadheading is not necessary as it will drop its spent blooms, but pinching back once established will create more branching and subsequently more blossoms. Shear once or twice in the season for a more attractive compact appearance if it gets out of its bounds as it is a vigorous grower. You can shear back to ⅓ of its volume to refresh and promote branching and renewed blooms within a week or so.
Superbena® Peachy Keen Verbena Spacing
Spacing in containers or in your landscape is important as this plant spreads out and trails easily. Give plants 8 to 12 inches of space in between. Superbenas grow up to 12 inches tall and spread out up to 24 inches wide. This mounding annual will also trail up to 24 inches, making it an attractive foreground to your garden bed or container garden. Pair this beautiful pastel annual with lime green foliage for a simple but stunning arrangement, or pair it with bold warm colors to bring out the best for your hanging basket or container garden.
