A new hybrid, Superbena Red verbena is a best seller, award winner right out of the start gate. Large flowers are held above deep veined medium to dark green leaves, with pink/purple centers blanket this slightly mounding/trailing annual, making it the perfect addition to your hanging baskets, containers or landscape gardens. Verbenas make great ground cover.
Native to Europe and parts of the eastern United States, verbena has hundreds of varieties. It grows as a tender perennial in Zones 8a through 11b, but in zones 3 to 7 we use it as an early spring annual, planting out after danger of last frost. It will give you three seasons of color, stopping only when a killing frost occurs in fall. This annual loves light and prefers light shade to full sun. Long sunny days bring the best blooms.
Superbena Red Verbena Care
Heat and drought tolerant, this annual falls in the easy to maintain category. It tolerates dry, poor soil, is not attractive to deer and is tolerant of powdery mildew. A one time slow release fertilizer for in ground plants, and a regular every two month feeding for containers will keep this plant lush and green. Regular watering and avoiding slow draining soil will keep root rot from happening. A soil pH of 5.8 to 6.2 is preferred, but again it is not too fussy.
Deadheading is not necessary as this is a self cleaning plant. Trimming the plant when first setting it out will encourage branching, giving a fuller look to your annual and lead to more blooms but is not necessary for good performance.
Superbena Red Verbena Spacing
Spacing is crucial for this low mounding trailing annual. Plant in the foreground of containers and hanging baskets for a cascading trail of blooms. Topping out at 6 to 12 inches tall and spreading out 18 to 30 inches, give it 10 to 14 inches of elbow room to give room to grow and help curb powdery mildew. This vibrant annual pairs well with its companion Superbenas, WhiteOut and Dark Blue to give you a midsummer nod to the red, white and blue, or pair with gaillardia, petunias, euphorbias, lantanas, lobelias and calibrachoas as well as spike grasses for increased visual interest and contrast in your container or cottage garden.
