- Growing Zones 8 - 11
Once in a while a color comes along that, when combined with other complementary or contrasting colors, it shows better than it would alone. Superbena Royale Chambray is just one of those flower colors. Alone it has an attractive periwinkle blue color, but combine this with a deep burgundy, pure white, deep pink or chartreuse green and watch it come alive! If its color pop doesn’t get you, its light fragrance reminiscent of lemons will.
Verbena are native to the Americas and Asia, and are a semi-woody warm season perennial in Zones 8a through 11b. They are used as an annual in Zones 3-7 when set out after the danger of the last frost has passed. Verbena hybrids like the Superbena series are an improved variety that are more vigorous and less fussy about their growing conditions than their ancestors. Longer blooming, more heat tolerant, and mildew resistance identify these hybrids as award winners in their class.
Superbena Royale® Chambray Verbena Care
Caring for superbena entails giving them a loose soil that drains well, about an inch of water a week, and a slow release fertilizer when first planted. Follow this by periodic applications of a water soluble fertilizer. Although they tolerate a wide range of soil types, verbena prefer a soil with an average pH of 5.5 to 6.2. They do not tolerate heavy clay soils, so be sure to amend your soil with rich compost or peat moss and sand to lighten it up. Container plantings or raised bed gardens work well as an alternate when you have heavy clay soil.
Deadheading is not required as this improved variety self cleans, but they will benefit from a light shearing from time to time to help them keep their shape, promote branching and subsequently put on more flowers. A pair of sharp shears or pruners will help make this job a simple one, just be sure to sterilize them between plants to reduce any chances of disease transmission.
Superbena Royale® Chambray Verbena Spacing
Spacing is important, but not nearly as important as with some annuals as this variety has been bred to resist powdery mildew naturally. Growing up to 12 inches tall, spreading up to 24 inches wide and trailing down up to 24 inches, they benefit from an 8 to 12 inch spacing between plants. When planting in a garden bed, place them in the front for full advantage of their low mounding habit. This annual is beautifully paired with other sun loving annuals like petunia, sutera, calibrachoa, alyssum, browallia and foliage like ipomoea and coleus as well as many graceful arching grasses.
