What does this mean?
This shows how the plant is typically used in a container combo — Thriller (tall focal point), Filler (mid-height mass), or Spiller (trailing over the edge).
Tip: match plant habit to the role for the best designs.
Sweet Caroline Sweetheart Shadowstorm sweet potato vine gives you the drama of near-black foliage without the “scraggly variegate” problem. Ipomoea batatas ‘NCORNSP-034SCVPG’ trails up to 30 inches, spreading 20–36 inches while staying fuller through the middle, so your containers continue to look fresh in midsummer. New leaves open green, then the dark color deepens and the speckled pattern shows up as the plant gets light. When we need one spiller to carry a whole recipe, this is the one we reach for.
The heart-shaped leaves spill over edges and layer on each other, creating a thick, textured skirt in hanging baskets and window boxes. In beds, it runs like a low groundcover and quickly covers bare soil. Heat and humidity don’t slow it down much. If a few leaves stay solid, you can pinch them out for a cleaner look, but the plant keeps pushing new patterned growth either way.
Sweet Caroline Sweetheart Shadowstorm Sweet Potato Vine Care
Grow this sweet potato vine in part sun to full sun; more light brings stronger dark tones and better pattern. Plant in a loose, well-draining mix or garden soil that sheds water easily, with a pH around 6.0–7.5. Water deeply, then let the top couple inches dry before the next drink—steady moisture helps it bulk up, but constantly wet soil can stunt it. Feed lightly but regularly in containers with a balanced fertilizer every two weeks, and dial back if growth gets too aggressive.
Snip back long runners whenever they start to crowd neighbors. A quick trim resets the outline and triggers fresh branching.
Sweet Caroline Sweetheart Shadowstorm Sweet Potato Vine Spacing
Space plants 10–18 inches apart in beds, closer for faster coverage. For containers, one plant fills a 12–14 inch pot; use two in a 16–18 inch bowl or basket for a thick spill. Pair it with snapdragon, calibrachoa, and blue salvia for a sun-ready mix that keeps color and structure while Shadowstorm handles the edge.
