Sweet Potato Vine has come to be known as the dramatic spiller that instantly dresses up just about any hanging basket or container of hot season annuals. The intense acid lime green of Sweet Carolina Upside™ Key Lime is no exception. This is one Sweet Potato Vine that prefers to climb instead of spill and will reach great heights.
Plant this vigorous climber as the thriller on a short trellis and watch it scramble to the top in no time. Sweet Caroline Upside™ also has a faint edging of red that could be used to highlight contrasting plants such as Calibrachoa and Lantana. Although this is a relative of the edible sweet potato, Sweet Caroline does not produce a sizable edible tuber. If grown from year to year in USDA zones 10-11, where it is perennial, a small tuber will eventually develop that is tasteless and of no nutritional value.
Sweet Caroline Upside™ Key Lime Sweet Potato Vine Care
Plant Sweet Potato vine in full sun on a partially shaded deck or patio after nighttime temperatures reach 55 degrees F. Ensure containers have excellent drainage and are heavy enough to counteract this plant's large amount of top growth. Use a soil-based all-purpose potting mix. Fertilize the container every two weeks with a diluted liquid fertilizer such as seaweed feed or fish emulsion from the early summer to the first frost.
Sweet Potato Vines can be grown as houseplants in the winter months if you garden in colder growing areas. Ensure the plant is brought indoors when nighttime temperatures fall to 55 degrees F. Direct sunlight and high humidity will keep the plant thriving until the following spring. If you do not have a bright enough window for Sweet Potato Vine, artificial grow lights can be used for at least 8 hours daily. Repot overwintered plants to encourage new vigorous growth.
Sweet Caroline Upside™ Key Lime Sweet Potato Vine Spacing
Sweet Caroline can become quite large in one season and will need a support to climb. The mature height is 6 feet with a spread of 3 feet. Plant it alone as a thriller in a mixed container with at least a 16-inch diameter.
