Sweet Emotion Blaze® Hardy Abelia supplies heady spring fragrance and a real fall foliage finale from the same shrub. Expect an upright plant that finishes about 5–6 feet tall and 4–5 feet wide, big enough to serve as a focal point without turning into a lanky monster. Unlike many abelias that are mainly about summer flowers, this selection is built around pink, spicy-sweet spring blooms and a stronger autumn color shift. We recommend placing it where you’ll brush past it in late May, because that’s when you notice why people talk about the scent.
Abelia mosanensis 'SMNAMW' is a deciduous, cold-hardy abelia related to honeysuckles and viburnums, both known for fragrance. The flowers form on old wood, which is why the bloom is so reliable when you leave the framework alone through winter. It’s a smart shrub for mixed borders that need a vertical backbone, for a loose hedge with seasonal payoff, or for a large container where the improved branching keeps it looking full to the soil line. Deer ignore it usually, and pollinators visit the flowers steadily while they last.
Sweet Emotion Blaze® Hardy Abelia Care
Grow it in full sun to part sun, with sunnier sites producing the strongest fall color. Plant in average soil that stays moist but well-drained, and keep the pH between 6.0–7.5. Good drainage matters, especially going into winter.
Water more consistently during spring bloom and the first growing season. Soak the root zone when the top couple inches of soil dry. A controlled-release shrub fertilizer in early spring is usually sufficient. In winter it drops its leaves, then pushes new growth from the framework once temperatures rise.
If you want to shape it, prune immediately after flowering so you don’t remove next season’s buds. You can also thin a few older stems at the base right after bloom to keep the habit upright and airy without shearing. For containers in colder zones, cluster the pot in a sheltered spot and mulch over the root zone once the soil freezes to reduce freeze-thaw stress.
Sweet Emotion Blaze® Hardy Abelia Spacing
Space plants 4–5 feet apart for a soft hedge that closes in without fighting for light. In a container, use a 22–24 inch pot and keep the root system evenly moist through spring bloom. In the landscape, pair it with catmint and coneflower so the abelia’s spring fragrance hands off to summer flowers, then let the abelia’s fall foliage carry the ending. For a patio combination, add coleus at the base for foliage contrast early in the season and finish with pansies as nights cool.
