The stripy flowers of the Sweet Fantasy Hydrangea will certainly be a talking point when they burst into color in summer. Also known as Hydrangea macrophylla 'Dancing Angel', the flower color of this unusual shrub is dependent on the pH of the soil. Dark green foliage covers the sturdy branches, which form a slightly spreading mound up to 4 feet tall.
The flower color is up to you as a neutral to alkaline soil will produce pink petals with dark pink stripes, while an acidic pH will result in blue flowers with navy stripes. This colorful hydrangea is a fantastic addition to a bed, border or a large container. It is also highly effective when used for foundation planting. This shrub is winter hardy to zone 5a.
Sweet Fantasy Hydrangea Care
The Sweet Fantasy Hydrangea performs best in partial or dappled shade and appreciates protection from harsh afternoon sun. It favors a humus-rich, moist and well-drained soil and needs to be watered regularly to keep the soil moist, but not overly saturated. A balanced or hydrangea-specific fertilizer applied in early spring will help support its growth over the coming year.
Prune in early spring to remove the spent flowers, cutting back to a pair of healthy-looking new buds. Moisture loss over the summer months can be reduced by mulching annually with organic matter.
Sweet Fantasy Hydrangea Spacing
Over time the Sweet Fantasy Hydrangea will grow to around 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide. Plant at a spacing of 3.5 to 4 feet apart for hedging purposes or further apart for well-defined shrubs.
