Sweet Spirit Grandiflora Rose features clusters of double, bright cerise-colored roses complemented by lustrous, emerald-green foliage and tall stems. Producing blooms worthy of a florist shop’s window, this cut flower provides interest both inside and out. This striking ornamental shrub blooms from summer to fall, reaching a height and spread of 3 to 4 feet. The blooms emit a traditional damask perfume with spicy and fruity notes, attracting pollinators including butterflies. This showy perennial is also known as Rosa Sweet Spirit™ ('Meithatie'): Patent PP30,860, Rosa hybrida ‘MEITHATIE’, and ‘Elegance Francaise'.
Bred by Bloomables®, this grandiflora rose is disease resistant and tolerates both heat and humidity. Its genetic heritage is traceable to parts of Asia, Europe, and the United States. Growing upright and bushy, this shrub is a wonderful option to add color and height to any landscape, patio, or deck. Plant it alongside other deer-resistant perennials such as coreopsis, lavender, Russian sage, and salvia. A low-maintenance perennial, this ornamental shrub is ideal for inexperienced gardeners wanting to take their first shot at growing roses.
Sweet Spirit Grandiflora Rose Care
Sweet Spirit Grandiflora Rose thrives when provided with 6 to 8 hours of full sun. Plant it in a hole large enough to accommodate the root ball in loamy, moist, slightly acidic, well-draining soil. If the soil lacks adequate nutrients or does not drain well, add some organic compost upon planting. A typical rose, this shrub requires about one to two inches of water per week. Apply a few inches of mulch around the shrub’s base to reduce water loss. After this perennial begins to bloom, feed it regularly, once or twice a month, with a formula for roses. Doing so will encourage blooming versus leaf growth.
A repeat bloomer, Sweet Spirit Grandiflora Rose produces flowers on new wood. Prune during the late winter months or early spring depending on your growing zone. First, remove diseased, dead, damaged, and/or crossed canes. Then, cut back the remaining canes by about 33%. After this ornamental shrub begins to flower, deadhead, or remove the spent blooms. This will encourage the plant to produce more blooms of higher quality.
Sweet Spirit Grandiflora Rose Spacing
Grow Sweet Spirit Grandiflora Rose individually or en masse in borders/hedges. Provide 3 feet of space in between plants. In container combinations, this plant acts as a striking thriller. Plant it along with other companion plants such as coreopsis, geraniums, marigolds, and foxglove.
