What do you get when you cross two top performing shade garden plants? A plant that ticks all of the boxes. Sweet Tea Foamy Bells is one outstanding shade plant that has a long season of interest. The fabulous cinnamon, pink and orange leaves come from Heuchera while the frothy blooms of white are the trademark of Tiarella. In the warmer hardiness zones, Heucherella ‘Sweet Tea’ has evergreen leaves that will brighten the shadiest corner of your garden. Foamy Bells are great planted in a woodland garden or potted up to give a color pop for a shady front step.
Sweet Tea Foamy Bells has a wonderful bushy shape that stays compact. Growing 18 inches wide x 24-28 inch wide, it is used very effectively as a border plant in the garden. The bright orangey-pink color makes a great contrast to other more muted blues, whites and greens of a shady garden. Heucherlla are very tolerant of the dry shade most often found under and around trees. They are low maintenance and will bloom from April - May.
Sweet Tea Heucherella Care
Foamy Bells requires average soil in every way. A pH of 6.0 - 7.0. An average texture of fluffy loam to sandy. Free draining and moderately moist soil. Part Sun to full shade position. Foamy bells are short enough to be planted as a ground cover under deciduous trees and really stands out in mixed planting of containers. The intense color of Sweet Tea would have a dramatic impact planted in a window box with either a lime or dark purple Sweet Potato vine.
Heucherella are very easy to care for. A quick clean up of spent bloom stems at the beginning of the summer is generally all of the pruning needed. At the same time a feed of a well balanced, slow release fertilizer will help the beautiful leaves stay perky and vibrant. Foamy Bells that are planted in containers will benefit from feeding more often. A weak feeding with a liquid fertilizer every 2 weeks will help these showstoppers look their best.
Sweet Tea Heucherella Spacing
Foamy bells are not very aggressive growers and can be planted slightly closer than other perennials. A spacing of 24-30 inches on center will ensure that the plants have enough air circulation to keep them happy and healthy.
