Widely grown for its low-maintenance needs and long blooming season, Catmint has been a popular garden perennial for generations. The newly introduced SylvesterBlue™ Catmint really is a showstopper though. It produces low, dense, strong branches that hold large blue flowers appearing from early summer until fall. Known botanically as Nepeta faassenii 'SylvesterBlue', this catmint is a showy, reliable performer in the garden.
The SylvesterBlue™ Catmint is ideal for cultivating in both rural and urban locations as it is both deer and rabbit resistant. As a hardy perennial, SylvesterBlue™ is suitable for growing in zones 3 through 8 and will even tolerate drought-like conditions once established. Loved by bees when in bloom, this catmint is bound to attract pollinators into the garden. With its low and spreading form, this Nepeta is perfect for growing in a dry border or for lining a path.
SylvesterBlue™ Catmint Care
For this SylvesterBlue™ Catmint to thrive, it should be grown in a spot where it will receive as much sun as possible. It also requires free-draining soil as it is known to struggle in overly wet or saturated soil. Catmints prefer lean soil and thus generally have no need for any extra fertilization. Even though Nepeta is drought tolerant, it will need frequent watering to help it establish for the first season at least.
Pruning this catmint by half once the first flush of flowers has faded will help keep this plant compact and encourage a second flush later in the year. In late fall or early spring, it can be pruned back to 4-6 inches above soil level to encourage new growth to appear in spring. SylvesterBlue™ Catmint is perfect for growing in a container; however, when winter beckons any pot-grown plants should be placed out of the cold rains to prevent their roots from sitting in water.
SylvesterBlue™ Catmint Spacing
Over time, SylvesterBlue™ Catmint can reach a maximum size of 12-15 inches high by 24-30 inches wide. When grown en masse, this catmint can be planted with a spacing of roughly 20 - 24 inches apart.
