Clematis Tangutica is a free-flowering, robust, and cold-hardy clematis variety that features lively yellow flowers and extraordinary seed heads. It will climb over an arbor quickly, and light up with bright lantern-like blooms all summer long. The whimsical seed heads look like they were taken straight out of a children’s book. Whether it's the abundant flowers or alluring seed heads, Clematis Tangutica offers a visual feast summer through fall.

This is a vigorous perennial vine in Zones 4-9. Plant Clematis Tangutica in a location where it can reach its 10-20’ height without impediment, like an arbor, large trellis, or tall fence. You will be impressed at how quickly this vine can climb!

Tangutica Clematis Care

Plant Clematis Tangutica in well-draining, moderate-to-moist soil and full-to-part sun. Mulch annually to maintain soil moisture and keep the roots cool. Fertilize or apply compost in early spring. Water only when the top 1-2” of soil is dry. Provide a sturdy trellis or arbor for this vigorous grower so that it does not overtake neighbors with its vines.

This clematis variety is in group 3 pruning. It blooms only on new growth (new wood) each summer. So cut it down to a foot from the ground in late fall, late winter, or early spring. Continue trimming off old blooms and stems throughout the summer to keep it blooming well into the fall.

Tangutica Clematis Spacing

This is a vigorous clematis variety that can encroach on neighbors if not given enough room. Site at least 2 feet away from other plants to give it room to spread.
