Growing Zones
Tara Hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia 'BIV01') produces abundant double white panicles in late spring, creating a dense, mophead-like floral display. These blooms transition to soft pink as they mature, extending seasonal interest. Large, oak-shaped leaves provide a bold texture, turning deep red and burgundy in the fall before shedding for winter. With a compact growth habit reaching 6 feet in height and width, this deciduous shrub is ideal for shaded landscapes, woodland gardens, and small yards.
Native to the Southeastern United States, Tara Hydrangea thrives in partial shade and adapts well to a variety of soil conditions. It is drought-tolerant once established and performs well in moist, well-drained soil. The exfoliating bark adds winter interest after the foliage drops, making it an excellent year-round garden addition. Use it as a mass planting, an accent in mixed borders, or as a natural hedge. The showy blooms attract pollinators and also work beautifully as cut or dried flowers.
Tara Hydrangea Care
Plant in partial to full shade with well-drained, moisture-retentive soil. This hydrangea prefers acidic to neutral soil and benefits from an annual application of slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Water regularly during the first growing season to encourage deep root development, then reduce watering once established. Mulching around the base helps maintain soil moisture and temperature consistency.
Since Tara Hydrangea blooms on old wood, prune only after flowering to maintain its shape and encourage next season’s blooms. Remove spent flowers and any dead or damaged branches in late summer. Avoid heavy pruning after mid-summer, as this may reduce flowering the following year.
Tara Hydrangea Spacing
Space plants 4 to 6 feet apart for a dense hedge or mass planting. If planting in a container, choose a pot at least 16 inches wide to accommodate the root system and allow for proper growth.
