The Taylor Red Cedar is a hardy evergreen that is attractive and easy to maintain. Also known as Juniperus virginiana, this tall, upright shrub has a tree-like appearance. The silvery, blue-green foliage has a frond-like appearance. This slim shrub has a very tidy appearance and narrows slightly near the top.
Use this shrub to accent an entryway, shield a deck or porch or create a tall hedge. The Taylor Red Cedar has a narrow, upright form and when several are grouped together, this shrub can create a stunning hedge. This plant is an evergreen so it will provide year-round color and privacy. This plant is also deer resistant so it is a great option for wooded areas. Grow the Taylor Red Cedar as a perennial in zones 4 through 8.
Taylor Red Cedar Care
Plant the Taylor Red Cedar in full sun because this shrub likes lots of sunlight. While this cedar can handle a variety of soil conditions, it will thrive in average soil that is moist and well drained. The soil pH should be less than 7.0. New plants need regular watering for the first two years, while established plants need supplemental water during a dry spell. Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer once each spring.
Remove dead or damaged branches, but do not heavily prune this plant. The Taylor Red Cedar has a good natural shape and removing branches may cause gaps in the greenery.
Taylor Red Cedar Spacing
The Taylor Red Cedar is a tree-like shrub with a columnar shape. Mature plants stand 15 to 20 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide. Space shrubs 4 to 6 feet apart to create a hedge.
