Miniature Roses are hands down the hardiest of all rose varieties to grow. Teddy Bear™ Orange Mini Rose sports delicate, burnished orange flowers from early summer to the first frost in fall. The tiny floribunda-type flowers cover every branch so heavily that the foliage seems to disappear. The moderately quick growth of Teddy Bear™ makes it a great choice as a groundcover for slopes or terraced garden borders. All varieties of miniature roses are hybrid cultivars bred to be extremely low maintenance with long-lasting gorgeous flowers.
Teddy Bear™ MIni Rose has a trailing growth habit that is perfect to use as a ground cover or a spiller in baskets and planters. Plant it near a retaining wall or other hardscaping to cascade down and soften the edges. Deer can be attracted to miniature roses when in bud, although any damaged branches generally are quick to grow back.
Teddy Bear Mini Rose Care
Mini Roses bloom the most when planted in locations with full sun and moderately fertile soil. In hot climates, plant Teddy Bear in light shade from midday on to protect plants from intense sun. Good drainage is imperative. Containers must have sufficient bottom drainage, and heavy clay soil should be amended with organic compost to improve the texture and drainage ability.
Fertilize Teddy Bear Mini Rose with a diluted liquid feed every 2-3 weeks after the first buds form in the late spring. Water this plant consistently to keep the roots from drying out completely. Allow for 1-1 ½ inches of water a week including any natural precipitation.
Pruning is done annually in early spring when new growth appears. Cut back any winter-damaged branches, and remove dead, dying, or diseased growth that could attract pests and diseases. Miniature Roses grow on their own rootstock and are not grafted onto other varieties. This makes them extremely cold hardy and able to regenerate when damaged. Deadhead spent flowers regularly throughout the summer to encourage more flower production. Container-grown plants can be mulched with straw or other organic material to provide extra insulation against harsh winter temperatures.
Teddy Bear Mini Rose Spacing
The exceptionally dainty Mini Roses are great for adding texture and color to containers or a garden bed. Teddy Bear reaches 18-24 inches tall and wide, and looks best when planted singly in a container with at least a 12-inch diameter. Space plants 18 inches apart, center on center, when planting a dense ground cover.
Miniature roses suffer from the same pests and diseases as full-size types. Take the same precautions to protect the foliage from excessive water and over-fertilizing with nitrogen-heavy formulas. Watering with drip irrigation or soaker hoses is ideal for keeping the foliage free of mildew and fungal diseases.
