Growing Zones
Tempelhof Hinoki Cypress, or Chamaecyparis obt. Tempelhof, is a dwarf conifer with deeply textured, evergreen foliage that emerges in golden-green shoots, quickly fanning out in overlapping vivid-green whorls. In the late fall and winter, the foliage takes on a bronzy hue. Tempelhof Hinoki Cypress grows to a height of 3 to 5 feet with an equal spread, and, as it matures, forms a pleasing dome shape.
Native to Japan, the Templehof Hinoki has a slow but consistent growth habit and forms into a loose, symmetrical, egg-shaped mound. It is a deer-proof shrub and will be left alone by hungry critters. It provides an excellent cover for birds. Use the Templehof Hinoki for foundational planting or to provide a beautiful, vivid background to perennials.
Tempelhof Hinoki Cypress Care
Plant your Templehof Hinoki Cypress in full to partial sun or dappled shade. It should be watered regularly, at least 1 inch per week, and more often in warmer climates. It prefers cooler climates overall. Do not plant your Templehof Hinoki in a wet or poorly drained area. Choose soils with good drainage and a pH of 5 to 7.
It requires little to no pruning, but if you prune for shape or control, take care not to cut into old, leafless wood. Young Templehof Hinoki Cypress needs fertilizer with extra phosphorus at the time of planting. More established plants need all purpose fertilizer once every 2 or 3 years, depending on soil quality.
Tempelhof Hinoki Cypress Spacing
Tempelhof Hinoki Cypress is perfect for compact spaces and foundation planting. It is a beautiful filler for any bed and has a soft, welcoming form. Plant it in a low, informal hedge, or in a bonsai garden. It is a perfect choice for a narrow space or container. Plant your Templehof Hinoki 5 to 6 feet apart from center to center, or for a dense hedge, 3 to 4 feet apart from center to center.
