The Original Endless Summer Hydrangea is the first hydrangea that blooms both on the previous year's branches as well as the new season's growth. This shrub has beautiful blue or pink flowers spring through summer. The color of blooms depend on soil pH, which can be amended using an acid fertilizer in the early spring. The compact size of the shrub of 4 feet tall and wide will fit almost any landscape. Makes a superior accent or specimen plant. These also make great cut flowers for arrangements.
The Original Endless Summer Hydrangea Care
Plant in well-drained, moist soil rich in nutrients. Although not required, prune Endless Summer Hydrangeas in early spring. Trim off any winter-damaged or dead stems throughout the year. Pruning during the growing season is not recommended, but if desired, prune after the first flush of blooms. Because this plant blooms on both old and new wood, pruning will not prevent the shrub from flowering all-together. Provide a layer of organic mulch to help retain moisture, add nutrients to the soil, and protect the plant in the cold winter months. Plant is a full sun to partial shade location, though this plant does best in partial shade. Water frequently, at least once per week. But ensure the soil does not stay wet.
The Original Endless Summer Hydrangea Spacing
To create a garden border, plant 4 feet apart, center on center. In mass plantings or as a foundation plant, space the bushes 8 feet apart. These hydrangeas also do well in garden planters. Ensure the planter is at least 30 inches wide, and has good drainage. Hydrangeas in planters do require more water as the pots dry out easier than the ground.
