Three Lobed Coneflower, or Rudbeckia triloba, is a herbaceous biennial that blooms from June to September with vibrant, ruffled, yellow flower petals under a deep-brown conical center. They grow from 36 to 42 inches in height and have a spread of 24 to 30 inches. Their foliage is dark green and divided into three oval parts. Three Lobed Coneflower has tall, hardy stems with delicate, golden petals. They are excellent for naturalizing and lend a refined, elegant look to any garden.
Three Lobed Coneflower, bred by American Beauties Native Plants, is the 1997 Georgia Gold Medal Winner for its long blooming season and gorgeous golden display of color. It has a spreading, bushy habit, so long as it is not crowded by other plants. It is drought, heat and pest tolerant, especially once it has been established. Because of its long blooming season and ample nectar, this coneflower attracts kaleidoscopes of butterflies and swarms of pollinators. In the fall, spent blooms attract songbirds because of their large quantity of seeds.
Three Lobed Coneflower Care
Three Lobed Coneflower needs full sun to perform at its best. It prefers sandy, loamy and moist soil, but can tolerate dry conditions. Three Lobed Coneflower will self sow and is easy to propagate.
To increase its blooming season, you should deadhead spent blooms. After the first frost, prune your coneflowers back to get them ready for the coming season.
Three Lobed Coneflower Spacing
Three Lobed Coneflower is excellent when planted in mass. It provides a low-maintenance splash of color to any garden or landscape and is a reliable bloomer. Plant your Coneflower as a border perennial, in a dewy meadow, or along a colorful walkway. At planting, space your coneflowers 12 to 24 inches apart from center to center.
