The Tiger Eyes Sumac is a stunner with some truly eye-catching foliage that provides year-round color. The large foliage fronds are chartreuse when they first emerge in the spring and later shift to a bright, non-burning yellow hue. Once fall rolls around, the foliage turns a vibrant scarlet with hints of orange. The entire time the stems are light pink in color for an interesting contrast. Sumac does not have a reputation for being a landscape plant, but the Tiger Eyes Sumac is about to change that.
The Rhus typhina Tiger Eyes is a large shrub with more of a tree-like appearance and will reach 10 to 12 feet tall. The canopy can spread 12 to 15 feet, so feature this plant in an area that can accommodate the size. Feature the Tiger Eyes Sumac as a specimen plant or as part of a landscape or used to create a vibrant hedge. This low-maintenance plant is a perennial in USDA zones 4 through 8.
Tiger Eyes Sumac Care
The Tiger Eyes Sumac is not very fussy, but this plant will thrive in ideal conditions. Plant in full sun or part shade. Use average, acidic, well-drained soil. Water when the top few inches of the soil are dry and drench the soil from the base of the trunk to the dripline to ensure the root ball is saturated. Apply a 2-inch layer of organic mulch to hold moisture in the soil and keep weeds at bay.
Apply a 6-2-4 slow-release fertilizer once during the spring and again in the fall. Cut back long shoots in late fall or early spring. Root suckers can be dug up and removed to prevent the plant from spreading and maintain a compact look.
Tiger Eyes Sumac Spacing
The Tiger Eyes Sumac is a large upright shrub that will grow 10 to 12 feet tall and spread 12 to 15 feet. Plants can be spaced 12 feet apart to create continuous planting. Space the plant 8 feet away from buildings.
