Totally Stoked™ Riptide Stoke’s Aster is the rare blue-flowering perennial that keeps showing up through the heat instead of pausing when summer gets sticky. It grows into a dense, mounded plant about 24–26 inches tall and 32–36 inches wide, then covers itself with 2½–3 inch periwinkle-blue blooms for weeks. Many “blue” perennials fade out or get floppy, but this one holds a fuller habit with better basal branching and a longer run of flowers. We've been impressed with its steady performance when other midseason bloomers start looking tired due to heat and humidity.

Also known as Stokesia laevis 'Riptide', this North American native wildflower selection developed from the North Carolina State University hybridizing program for performance in hot, humid summers. The rich, dark green foliage makes a clean base for the flower stalks, and the plant is typically ignored by deer and rabbits while drawing bees and butterflies in a constant loop. Use it to thread cool color through warm-toned plantings, to soften the front edge of a shrub grouping, or to build a low, flowering block that still reads from the street. The sturdy stems also make it useful for casual cut-flower bunches without stripping the plant bare.

Totally Stoked™ Riptide Stoke’s Aster Care

Plant in full sun for the best bloom density and strongest stems. Give it well-drained soil and keep it out of winter-wet spots; it tolerates poor to fertile ground as long as water doesn’t linger, with a comfortable pH range from acidic to neutral (about 5.5–7.0). If your soil is heavy, a raised planting area helps protect the crown during cold, damp periods.

Water consistently the first season, then let the soil dry slightly between deep soakings; if leaves feel firm but the plant is slow to flower, it usually wants more sun rather than more water. Once established, it handles short dry stretches, and fertilizer is optional in average soils. In colder parts of zone 5, a light winter mulch after the ground freezes can reduce heaving and keep the crown stable.

Deadhead individual spent flowers to keep buds coming, and remove finished flower stems as they brown. When the main flush ends, you can cut the plant back to the basal foliage to prompt fresh new growth. Divide in spring if the clump becomes crowded or you want more plants for repeat plantings.

Totally Stoked™ Riptide Stoke’s Aster Spacing

Space plants 32–36 inches apart so the mounded habit can knit together without crowding airflow. In containers, start with a 16–18 inch pot and treat it as the main filler, leaving room for a trailing companion to spill over the rim. For in-ground pairings, set it alongside yarrow and tickseed to layer flower shapes while keeping everything drought-tolerant once established. On patios, mix it with petunias and sweet potato vines so the cooler periwinkle blooms have bold foliage contrast all summer.
