Totally Stoked™ Whitecaps Stokes Aster (Stokesia laevis) delights the eye with large, near-white blooms brushed faintly in pink. Each 2½-3" flower catches attention against the plant’s lush green foliage, standing about 24 to 26 inches tall with a mounded spread up to 36 inches. Mid to late summer is when these blooms shine, offering a serene contrast to more colorful perennials. We've been impressed by the large flower size and long-lasting performance, which bring a special note to borders and container displays.
Native to North America, Stokes Aster resists deer and rabbits, making it a reliable choice in areas with high wildlife activity. Its tolerance for heat and humidity comes from southern breeding programs, yet it adapts across zones 5 to 9. Use Totally Stoked™ Whitecaps in cottage-style landscapes, mass plantings, or near bright late-season perennials for an effortless blend. Whether you grow it in full sun or partial sun, count on it to support bees and butterflies late in the season.
Totally Stoked™ Whitecaps Stokes Aster Care
Plant in fertile, well-draining soil that remains evenly moist but never waterlogged. A slightly acidic to neutral pH suits this aster well. Full sun is ideal, though it can adapt to partial sun if needed. Light fertilizing in spring encourages fresh growth and abundant summer blooms.
After the initial bloom period, clip off spent flower stalks to spur additional buds and maintain a tidy appearance. Cutting stems back to basal foliage in early spring can open space for new shoots. If growing in containers, select a pot with good drainage and water whenever the topsoil begins to dry. In colder zones, apply a thin layer of mulch to protect the root system once ground temperatures drop.
Totally Stoked™ Whitecaps Stokes Aster Spacing
Separate plants by about 32 to 36 inches in mixed beds or rows to ensure their wide habit has room to fill out. For potting, choose a container around 12 to 14 inches across so the roots and foliage can expand comfortably.
