Tropicana Hybrid Tea Rose is a modern rose that retains all of the best qualities of an heirloom or Old Garden Rose. The rich coral, double blooms are heavily scented with an enchanting floral perfume. This hybrid tea rose is easy to care for while looking like a diva in the garden. Tropicana was bred in Germany and introduced in 1960.
Tropicana has superior resistance to diseases and pests. The deep green foliage stays fresh and clear all season long and is not bothered by heat or humidity. Combine Tropicana with plants that accent and highlight the rich coral shades of the petals. Blue catmint, fresh green Lady’s Mantle, and deep purple-blue hardy geranium are excellent companions.
Tropicana Hybrid Tea Rose Care
Plant hybrid tea roses in a spot with full sun, well-draining soil, and access to supplemental watering. Drip irrigation or soaker hoses are the best way to water roses while keeping their foliage dry. Amend the garden bed with 1-2 inches of compost before planting, and mulch the root zone well afterward. Hybrid tea roses will bloom the best with two applications of granular fertilizer formulated for roses and flowering shrubs. Apply early in the spring as the new foliage emerges and again one month later as the first flower buds form. Always follow the manufacturer's recommended dosage.
Shrub roses need annual pruning to keep the plants thriving and blooming well. Late winter or very early spring is the best time to prune back any stems that have been damaged or that are old and unproductive. The overall height can also be cut back by half to encourage more branching of stems. Tropicana is a great rose for cutting and arranging. Cut stems to a set of leaves right above a leaf bud to encourage more flowers and a compact shape.
Tropicana Hybrid Tea Rose Spacing
Hybrid Tea Roses are generally medium-sized shrubs planted as an informal low hedge or used as specimen plants in a container on a deck or patio. Tropicana reaches a mature height and spread of 3-4 feet. Space plants 40 inches apart on the center for making a dense hedge that fills in quickly. Tropicana can be grown in containers with a diameter of at least 16 inches and at least the size of a 5-gallon pot.
