Silver‑blue sprays cover Chamaecyparis pisifera ‘True Blue’ from tip to trunk, giving this compact conifer a soft, cloud‑like presence all year. Mature height tops out around 3–4 feet with a neat 2–3‑foot spread, so it slots easily beneath windows or along narrow walks. Needles hold their color through winter without the browning that plagues many blue selections, keeping small gardens lively when most plants fade. Slow growth and a naturally rounded outline mean you can enjoy the striking hue without constant shaping.

Native to the cool, misty forests of Japan, this dwarf false cypress handles cold down to Zone 4 yet shrugs off summer heat across Zone 8. Deer turn up their noses at the aromatic foliage, and pests rarely bother the tight, mossy texture. Use a single specimen as a living accent beside rocks, mass several for a low evergreen curtain, or drop one into a patio pot where the fluffy needles invite a closer look. Because the plant roots stay shallow, it also stabilizes slopes and banks while showing off that distinctive powder‑blue tone.

True Blue False Cypress Care

Set the shrub in full sun for the strongest color; it will accept light afternoon shade in hotter climates. Choose moist, acidic soil that drains quickly and amend heavy clay with compost or pine bark to keep air around the roots. Water weekly during the first growing season, tapering to deep soaks during dry spells once the plant is established; it dislikes permanent drought but hates soggy feet even more. An annual spring application of a slow‑release, acidic evergreen fertilizer is all it needs to maintain dense growth.

Shearing is rarely required, yet you can clip stray stems in late winter just before new growth pushes; avoid cutting back into old, leafless wood. Remove any winter‑burned tips at the same time. Container plants overwinter best against a sheltered wall; water sparingly but do not allow the potting mix to dry completely.

True Blue False Cypress Spacing

For a seamless low hedge or mass planting, set plants 24 inches apart, measuring from the center of one root ball to the next. Space 30–36 inches when you want individual mounds to remain distinct. A new container specimen should start in a pot at least 14 inches wide and deep, with generous drainage holes to keep the root zone airy. Repot every 3–4 years or when roots circle the base.
