Another great hit from the Altman Plants’ True Bloom series is the award-winning True Passion Hybrid Tea Rose. With its blazing, double, ruffled, fire-orange blooms backed by Kelly-green foliage, this highly disease resistant hybrid tea rose flowers from June until the first heavy frost of autumn. Also known as Rosa hybrida True Passion PP28, 928 (HD), 'Double 10', and 'LIM10', this shrub rose heats up borders, beds, and containers with its smoldering color and spicy fragrance. Its award-winning florets not only support the environment by attracting pollinators, but also make lovely bouquets that can be enjoyed inside a vase atop a kitchen counter as well as outside on a deck/patio table.
Growing to heights of 4 to 5 feet and spreads of 2 to 3 feet, True Passion Hybrid Tea Rose grows tall and upright. Highly resistant to diseases common to roses such as downy mildew, rust, powdery mildew, and that infamous devil, black spot, rose lovers can exhale a sigh of relief when choosing this ornamental. With a tolerance for heat and drought, this cultivar seems almost too good to be true. Filling the air with its faint peppered scent, this low-maintenance shrub should be in every rose aficionado’s collection.
True Passion Hybrid Tea Rose Care
Plant True Passion Hybrid Tea Rose in a hole somewhat larger than the root mass. Loosen the soil around the edges and at the bottom of the hole. This hybrid tea rose thrives when afforded 6 to 8 hours of sun, preferably in an easterly location. Plant it in loamy, moist, slightly acidic soil that drains well. Add compost to increase the soil’s fertility. This rose needs anywhere from one to two inches of water per week. Feed it one or two times per month with a formula low in nitrogen and high in phosphorus/potassium during the flowering period.
Prune True Passion in the late winter / early spring months. Remove any dead, diseased, damaged canes, and trim crossing stems to improve shape and air circulation. Cut the remaining stems by about a half to a third. Apply a mound of compost around the crown to overwinter.
True Passion Hybrid Tea Rose Spacing
Space True Passion Hybrid Tea Rose about 3 feet apart when planting in a group. Plant this ornamental in borders, beds, hedges, and containers. Add its prize-winning blooms and foliage to alstroemeria, bupleurum, Gerber daisies, and statice cuttings to make warm, inviting bouquets.
