Classy like a glass of fine red wine, the Tuxedo™ Weigela, also known as the Date Night™ Tuxedo™ Weigela, blooms beautiful tubular white flowers with a hint of soft peachy tones. The shrub’s one-of-a-kind foliage comprises deep purple leaves, so dark they almost appear black in some areas. The contrast between the bright flowers and mysterious foliage makes this shrub a showstopper in a mixed garden bed. With a maximum height of 5 feet and a spread of 4 feet, your flowers will begin growing between the middle of May and June.
With its moderate growth rate, your fragrant Tuxedo™ Weigela will grow approximately 12 to 24 inches per year. Native to Eastern Asia, this deciduous shrub is deer resistant and does not require much maintenance. In rare cases, it may become infected with a fungal disease which will cause the plant to start drying from the bottom upwards. To remedy this, you can spray your shrub with an organic fungicide, which is safe for children and animals. This drought-tolerant plant can be used for perennial or shrub borders, foundation planting, and along pathways. Your shrub is likely to attract butterflies and hummingbirds.
Tuxedo™ Weigela Plant Care
To plant your shrub, dig a hole that is double the width of the pot it came in and make sure it is deep enough so that the top of the root ball is aligned with the ground around it. Use well-draining soil and ensure that your shrub is planted in an area where it can take in at least 6 hours of direct, unfiltered sun on a daily basis. This shrub doesn’t require a specific pH level but grows best with a soil pH ranging from 5.5 to 7.5. Although not necessary, you can fertilize your shrub a single time with an all-purpose fertilizer, preferably during early springtime when the leaves begin sprouting.
You can trim your Tuxedo™ Weigela during the spring after the threat of frost has passed. You should carefully cut off the seed pods belonging to the flowers that grew the previous year. Doing so will encourage new growth and keep your shrub in optimal condition. Furthermore, you can also prune it to achieve a more desirable shape. To rejuvenate your shrub, locate any branches that appear aged or woody and trim them from the base. Be careful not to trim more than a third of your shrub’s total branches.
