Growing Zones
The Twilight Zone Little Bluestem Grass, also known as the Schizachyrium Scoparium ‘Twilight Zone’ perennial, brings a touch of magic to your garden. Instead of the common green tones you would expect, this perennial displays beautiful neon blue foliage and has flower spikes of varying purple shades. During midsummer, your plant’s blades will show off a soft, silver mauve tone and will slowly transition into bright purple during autumn. Your perennial will grow 4 to 5 feet in height and reach a spread of about 2 to 3 feet. In addition to its beautiful and one-of-a-kind colors, this plant supports pollinators and offers winter food and nesting material for an array of birds including finches, native sparrows, juncos, and doves.
Native to North America, this tough perennial is both drought and deer resistant. It has a medium growth rate and grows with an upright, columnar form. It doesn’t require much maintenance as it is easy to grow even for beginners, but you should keep an eye out for possible pests such as aphids, spider mites, and spittlebugs. These perennials are perfect for massing in meadow landscapes or for planting in 1 to 2-gallon containers and are also a great option for erosion control.
Twilight Zone Little Bluestem Grass Plant Care
Your Twilight Zone Little Bluestem Grass will do best when getting at least 6 hours of daily full sun exposure. Well-drained soil of either an acidic or alkaline pH level will work perfectly. It is important to avoid overwatering as this perennial prefers dry to average moisture levels but keeping it slightly moist will be the most beneficial. This plant can tolerate both heat and humidity and will thrive with an organic fertilizer that you can use once per year.
Pruning this perennial is not necessary. But you can cut it back within 4 to 6 inches of the ground level around late wintertime or early springtime by using a garden saw. This will help promote growth and keep the plant looking fresh and healthy.
Twilight Zone Little Bluestem Grass Plant Spacing
When planting your Twilight Zone Little Bluestem Grass Plant, you should leave at least 20 inches of space in between each plant.
