Mature Height

Mature Spread
Unplugged® Red Scarlet Sage (Salvia coccinea 'DWsahyb03') sets the stage with continuous red color from spring until frost. It matures to about 14 to 24 inches in height, features upright stems, and displays a steady wave of trumpet-shaped blooms that appeal to bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Warmth encourages the best performance, and once summer temperatures kick in, the plant explodes with eye-catching inflorescences. In our experience, its carefree nature and dazzling scarlet tones make it a rewarding choice for both new and seasoned gardeners.
Deer typically steer clear of this annual salvia, which adapts easily to landscapes and container gardens. Its bright, nectar-rich flowers also serve as a magnet for pollinators, adding extra life and movement wherever it is planted. Moderate watering and minimal fuss keep it thriving through scorching weather. Use it for low-maintenance borders, mass plantings, or as a dramatic focal point in mixed patio pots.
Unplugged® Red Scarlet Sage Care
Choose a site that offers direct sunlight (at least four hours daily) to showcase the best bloom display. Provide well-draining soil—average to poor soil fertility is acceptable—and water regularly, particularly while plants establish. A balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every few weeks supports strong growth. Mulching around the base helps retain moisture on particularly hot days.
A light trim is optional if branches grow beyond the desired shape, though deadheading is unnecessary for ongoing flowering. If leaves drop from severe drought, a mild shear will rejuvenate fresh top growth. Salvia in containers needs a quality potting mix with sufficient drainage; water thoroughly when the top inch of soil is dry. In cooler climates, bring potted plants under shelter if frost threatens, or treat them as an annual that finishes at season’s end.
Unplugged® Red Scarlet Sage Spacing
Position each plant about 12 to 16 inches apart when designing rows or cluster plantings. For container displays, opt for a pot at least 12 inches wide so the root system and leafy canopy have adequate space.
