The search for a true blue flower is over! Unplugged® So Blue™ Mealycup Sage Salvia, farinacea does not disappoint. With its contrasting silver-green foliage and eloquent blue flower spikes, this salvia will paint the town (or landscape) blue. This plant has an upright habit and averages 14 to 24 inches in height. The blooms and stem display non-stop colors from spring until fall.
Mealycup sage is native to Mexico and has naturalized in plains, prairies, and woodland edges in Texas and Oklahoma. It is drought tolerant, deer resistant, and pollinator-friendly to the birds and bees. This is a thriller addition to container planting. In the landscape, this plant creates stunning borders along walkways, or it can paint a garden hillside with brushstrokes of blue.
Unplugged So Blue Salvia Care
Salvia Unplugged is low maintenance. It needs no deadheading, but it responds to trimming any time of the year. Trimming stimulates more branching and creates a thick blooming canopy. Plant in partial to full sun. Soil and water conditions require average moist, well-draining soil. Once established, it will tolerate heat and drought. If it undergoes an extended period of drought, Salvia tends to drop its leaves. Make sure the plant gets rehydrated and cut back the plant back by ⅓ to stimulate new growth. Don’t worry! It will make a full recovery.
Mealycup Sage is hardy in zones 8 to 10. In almost every other zone, it is an outdoor annual. This plant does not overwinter and is killed after a hard frost.
Unplugged So Blue Salvia Spacing
Unplugged® So Blue™ Salvia will spread 12 to 16 inches. In the landscape plant salvia in staggered rows 10 to 14 inches apart when used in mass plantings. Use at least a 14-inch container and space salvia 8 plus inches apart when planting in a container. As a thriller, position this plant in the middle or back of the pot to enhance height and proportionality when used in combination planting.
