Lamium galeobdolon ‘Variegatum', commonly known as Variegated Archangel, will form a glowing, silver carpet on the toughest sites. This spreading groundcover has silver variegated leaves that stay evergreen in warmer climates. It sends up whorls of bright, two-lipped yellow flowers in spring. This groundcover looks delicate but is tough as nails and can smother out weeds in no time.

Variegated Archangel spreads by creeping stems that root wherever its nodes touch the ground. It can spread aggressively under optimal growing conditions. This groundcover is useful in erosion control, weed suppression, and dry shade. It quickly fills in areas under large trees, where many other plants fail, and can brighten shady corners in need of a makeover. Use it in a moon garden to sparkle at night among other silvery plants.

Variegated Archangel Care

This perennial grows best in part shade to full shade. It adapts easily to different soil types, including clay and sand, and tolerates heat and short periods of drought. It prefers rich, moist soil, but will spread less rapidly in poor, dry soil. Water Variegated Archangel regularly during the growing season to help it look its best. Apply a generous layer of organic compost around the root zone to slow evaporation of moisture.

Trim back spent foliage in early spring before new growth emerges. The foliage will remain evergreen in Southern zones.

Variegated Archangel Spacing

To form a solid mat, space individual plants approximately 18 inches apart on center and stagger the planting rows.If growing in a container, select a weather-resistant pot with large holes for drainage and a diameter of at least 16 inches.
