Weigela are the basic foundation plantings for gardens, A true workhorse that provides nectar for pollinators and beauty for us gardeners. Variegated Weigela is anything but basic. The light green, arrow shaped leaves have edges of creamy white that set off beautiful pink flowers through the early summer. The variegated color scheme can be used to enliven almost any established foundation planting or informal hedge.
Variegated Weigela attract many beneficial pollinators such as native bees, Hummingbirds and butterflies. Weigela are in the Honeysuckle family and produce lots of nectar while in bloom. These deciduous shrubs fit easily into a Cottage Garden scheme or a more modern, Urban Wildlife Garden.
Variegated Weigela Care
Weigela does well in just about any situation. Full sun to part shade will help the blooms to develop and keep the variegated colors of the leaves bright. Well drained, moist soil will help this shrub to establish a good root structure fast. As Variegated Weigela matures it will become more drought tolerant and only need extra irrigation during hot or dry periods.
Maintenance is easy with weigela. A well balanced, slow release fertilizer can be applied early in the spring. Pruning is best done after the shrubs have finished blooming if you want to keep it to a certain size or shape. Winter dieback happens in the colder hardiness zones frequently. Cutting out dead, diseased, dying or diagonal branches early in the spring will keep Weigela growing happily. Watering at the base of the plant with a soaker hose or drip irrigation system helps keep the foliage from getting wet and helps prevent fungus or mildew diseases.
Variegated Weigela Spacing
The overall height and width of Variegated Weigela is 5-6 feet. Planting is best done at 5 foot on center when using this shrub in a group as an informal hedge. Underplanting with spring and summer perennials really enhances the year round interest of Weigela. Columbine, Peonies, Spirea and Coneflowers all make lovely companion plants.
