Botanically known as Calluna vulgaris ‘Beauty Lady', Veluwe Heather features densely packed, green spikes that have an abundance of delicate white flowers appearing in late summer. This compact evergreen shrub is late blooming, with upright spikes and white buds that continue to show off until early winter. A tough and easy-care addition to mixed borders, this heather also works well in containers and rock gardens.
If planted as a groundcover, Veluwe Heather will form a dense blanket of beautiful form and flowers. Veluwe Heather is a magnet for bees and other pollinators when it blooms from September through October. This drought-tolerant, deer-resistant heather grows in hardiness zones 5-8 and reaches a mature height and spread of 12-18 inches.
Veluwe Heather Care
Locate Veluwe Heather in a sunny location, in well-draining acidic soil that retains moisture and is well draining. Once Heather plants mature, they can tolerate drought conditions. Add some peat moss into your planting hole and mix it with the existing soil to increase soil acidity. In harsh winter climates, plant Veluwe Heather in a sheltered location where it will be protected from drying winter winds.
Provide a layer of mulch such as pine needles to the root zone in early winter to protect the plant from severe winter weather. It’s not necessary to fertilize Veluwe Heather as they prefer average to lean soil. Prune in early spring as new growth emerges to shape it and remove any damaged foliage from the winter.
Veluwe Heather Spacing
Space Veluwe Heather plants 16-18” apart, center on center, when planting en masse, being sure to allow room for the full spread of the mature plant. Veluwe makes a big impact when several plants are grouped together to be used as a late-season flowering groundcover, where its dense, thick habit will choke out any competing weeds.
