Velveteeny™ Purple Smokebush, Cotinus coggygria, is a highly prized, showy ornamental shrub. It features a petite, rounded, multi-stemmed form with large airy panicles of pink flowers. Muted gray overtones appear at the ends of branches in summer, atop rich burgundy foliage, creating a stunning ethereal effect. The round leaves turn a vibrant reddish-orange color in fall.
Velveteeny™ Purple Smokebush is a no-fuss, easy-to-maintain, drought-tolerant landscape stunner. It grows 3-4 ft in height and width in Hardiness Zones 4-8, about half the size of other Smokebush varieties. Lovely used in fresh and dried floral arrangements, Velveteeny™ Purple Smokebush attracts hummingbirds, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators and is often overlooked by browsing deer. Because of its nice compact size, it can be planted in a mixed border, in containers, or used as a spectacular low-growing hedge.
Velveteeny™ Purple Smokebush Care
Plant Velveteeny™ in a full sun location that receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily, in moist well-draining soil. Once Velveteeny™ Purple Smokebush matures, it's adaptable to drier soils. Avoid planting in poorly draining, soggy soils.
Velveteeny™ Purple Smokebush will benefit from application of a well-balanced all-purpose fertilizer in spring. Early spring is also the time to lightly prune to shape the plant. If planting in a container, select a pot at least 30 inches in diameter to accommodate the large rootball and make sure it has plenty of drainage holes. When growing shrubs in containers, they may require more frequent watering than if they were planted in the landscape.
Velveteeny™ Purple Smokebush Spacing
Velveteeny™ Purple Smokebush is gorgeous when used as an accent or focal specimen in a mixed border, or as a screening hedge when mass planted. If planting as a screening hedge, space plants 3 1/2 feet apart, center on center, for a dense growing hedge.
