The delicate fruit is best eaten fresh but can keep for a few days or up to a week if refrigerated. Ficus carica is a deciduous plant with woody stems and large glossy foliage with a slight ruffle. Vern’s Brown Turkey Fig will stand about 12 feet tall and features deeply lobed green foliage.
Vern's Brown Turkey Fig Care
Plant in the spring using fertile soil that is moist but well-drained. The soil should have a neutral to alkaline pH. Space plants about 10 to 15 feet apart. Select a spot with full sun to partial shade, so about 4 to 6 hours of sunlight. Prune the plant during the winter to maintain its shape.
Growing Vern's Brown Turkey Fig
Vern's Brown Turkey Fig is a reliable producer once mature, but it will take about two years before this self-pollinating plant will produce fruit. Protect the plant when grown in cold climates where the winter temperature will dip below 10 degrees F.
Growing Vern's Brown Turkey Fig in Containers
This beauty can be grown in containers for flexible placement options. Container-grown plants must be brought indoors to overwinter in cold climates to protect the roots from cold temperatures.
Watering Vern's Brown Turkey Fig
Keep the soil consistently damp. Water new plants weekly or whenever the top few inches of the soil dry out. Plants grown in containers will need to be watered more often.
Feeding Vern's Brown Turkey Fig
Amend the soil with organic compost when planting and top-dress the soil each year using compost. Feed this tree using a balanced fertilizer with a ratio like 10-10-10 annually in the spring.
