It can be said that there is a clematis for every garden and Ville De Lyon proves this point with its large petals and cherry red to magenta blooms. Sporting a slightly ruffled darker cerise margin on the overlapping large red petals, you will appreciate the prolific free flowering habit of Ville De Lyon. Attracting bees, butterflies and hummingbirds, you will also be providing a valuable source of food for our pollinators! The large 4 to 6 inch blossoms are going to be irresistible. The bright pop of yellow in the center and the medium green veined leaves complete the look for this late summer to fall bloomer.

Clematis vines are sun seekers. In their native habitat in Asia, they scramble up rocky slopes in search of the sun. Their bright colors, shapes and sizes have been cultivated for centuries as horticulturists strive to bring more beauty to the garden. As you may have guessed by the name given this cultivar, Ville De Lyon was cultivated in France in 1899, and has been a favorite around the world ever since. As a prolific climber, Ville De Lyon is a great choice for climbing up and over an arbor. Pair it with a white or blush pink climbing rose on the same arbor for an outstanding display!

Ville De Lyon Clematis Care

This clematis is categorized in the easy care category. Plant it in full sun, with some afternoon shade appreciated in the hotter Southern regions. Give it a support to climb on. This free flowering, long season blooming perennial vine will grow to expansive lengths, so think big when planning the support system. Shade its root zone with a ground cover perennial, or mulch with a good quality mulch, or use stones or pebbles. They like their roots to be cool and their heads to be hot. Light shade is tolerated, but color and flowering will be sacrificed if there is too much shade. Clematis can grow well in clay, loam or sand, but prefer a rich well draining garden soil. The preferred pH range is 5.8 to 6.2, slightly acid to neutral. Fertilize with a low nitrogen fertilizer after new growth starts to break in the late spring, then use a balanced fertilizer 4 to 6 weeks after that, alternating back and forth throughout the growing season. This will support the proper balance of foliage to flowers.

Deadheading may encourage reblooming, but this is a free flowering perennial and it will put on a show for you for a long season. Remove spent flowers by clipping the stem back to the first set of leaves. In the fall, consider leaving spent flowers on the vine as the frilly seed heads make an interesting texture. Ville De Lyon Clematis is in pruning group 3, and it blooms only on new growth in late summer. So trim plants back hard in late winter before new growth appears. Cut it down to about 12 inches from the soil level. Mulch the root zone in harsh winter regions for added protection against frost heaving.

Ville De Lyon Clematis Spacing

Spacing clematis is important, especially for a climber like Ville De Lyon, which can reach 10 to 12 feet tall and spread out to 36 inches wide. Leave 36 inches of space in between plants for best air circulation and to give them room to grow. Clematis can be susceptible to fusarium wilt, so remove any wilted or dead stems immediately and destroy them. Should the worst happen and the entire vine wilt, trim it down to the ground and it will come back the next spring. Good housekeeping and proper placement in a full sun location will help to prevent plant diseases. Do you love the cottage garden look, especially if you have an arbor or a fence that would look lovely with a red flowering vine clambering over it? Then look no further than Ville De Lyon Clematis for your late summer garden this year!

We encourage all plant lovers to purchase the Plant Addicts Warranty, whether you're a new gardener or an expert. There are many variables outside of anyone's control that can cause a plant to die. The Plant Addicts Warranty is a 1 year warranty protecting you from all of the unknowns and will replace your plant if something were to happen to it.

The warranty is purchased on a per plant basis and must be purchased at the same time as the plant(s). We will cover 100% of the price of the plant, but the warranty does not cover shipping costs. SImply let us know if your plant has died within 1 year of receiving it and we will get you a new one shipped out as soon as possible (depending on the time of the year and availability). Guarantee and Warranty

Plant Shipping

Below are some factors we consider when determining when to ship the plants depending on the timing of the order.

Winter to Early Spring

We ship only when it's warm enough to plant in your growing zone.
Sometimes plants aren't completely ready to sell and ship in early spring. We will wait until the plants are ready before shipping so you don't get a subpar product.
For Southern plants we will be able to ship much earlier than plants coming from our northern nursery.

Summer

If there is extreme heat we may delay shipping for a week or several weeks.
We review what areas the plants are traveling through as well as your location.

Fall into Winter

We’ll ship plants out all the way up to the end of the fall planting season!

Winter

Get your order in early to reserve your plants for Spring planting!

Once your plant is shipped you’ll receive an automated email with tracking information.
