Vintage Gold False Cypress, botanically known as Chamaecyparis pisifera ‘Vintage Gold’, will be a beacon of brightness in any dark spot in the landscape. This false cypress is valued in the landscape for its delicate, fernlike, bright yellow foliage and dwarf, mounding form that works well as a single specimen, in foundation plantings, or as a low, vibrant-colored, evergreen hedge.
This outstanding dwarf conifer delivers year-round seasonal interest in form, texture, and color. It is excellent when paired with different-colored evergreens for contrasting tones and textures. Vintage Gold False Cypress turns a beautiful coppery bronze in fall. It’s a slow-growing variety, hardy in zones 5-8, and compact, at a height and spread of 3-5 ft.
Vintage Gold False Cypress Care
Vintage Gold False Cypress does well in full sun, where it receives 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. It prefers to be planted in soil rich in organic matter such as garden compost. Water when the first few inches of soil dry out, and keep the soil moist, particularly during the first year after it’s planted. Vintage Gold False Cypress will be able to tolerate brief dry spells once it matures. Keep leaders pruned to maintain their compact mounded form. Trimming is best done on new, young wood during winter dormancy or in very early spring. Apply a thick layer of mulch around the root zone in early winter to protect it in colder climates.
Because of its dwarf size, Vintage Gold False Cypress is well suited to planting in outdoor containers. When grown in containers, this shrub may require more frequent watering than it would when planted in the landscape. Additionally, extra winter protection may be needed when Vintage Gold False Cypress is planted in containers in harsher climates.
Vintage Gold False Cypress Spacing
Vintage Gold False Cypress is recommended for use in mass plantings, rock and alpine gardens, foundation plantings, as an informal hedge, or container plantings. Depending on your application, be sure to consider the mature width, spacing shrubs about 3 ft apart if planted in groups.
