Growing Zones
The Vintage series of coneflowers are ideal for small gardens or containers. The mature height of Vintage Mango is 18-24 inches–perfect for adding color to a seasonal container or the edges of a pollinator garden. The heavily branched stems support extra large, single flowers that attract all sorts of beneficial pollinators. Echinacea x Sunmagic ‘Vintage Mango’ has a lovely pale orange coloring that does not fade in the sun or with age and will look as good planted with pastel shades as it does with bold, hot colors.
The compact growth habit requires no staking or seasonal pruning; these coneflowers will grow upright and strong, even after summer storms and wind events. The open flower shape of Echinacea provides easy access to butterflies, native bees, and other pollinators, encouraging more wildlife into your garden. Drought tolerance is one of the best traits for coneflowers, and Vintage Mango does not disappoint. Only container-grown or newly installed plants require regular watering. Vintage Mango is quick to establish and will bloom nonstop from mid-summer to late fall.
Vintage Mango Coneflower Care
Provide well-draining soil and full sun to achieve the best blooming and strongest plants. Soil texture is not an issue. Coneflowers grow well in clay, loamy, rocky, or sandy soils. Water newly planted coneflowers deeply once or twice a week for the first growing season. This will encourage deep root growth, which is more drought tolerant than shallowly growing roots.
Deadhead only if the plant looks a little ragged toward the end of the summer. New flowers will develop without deadheading. Plants naturally develop a pleasing mounded shape that does not get loose or floppy as the season progresses.
Fertilize plants in the ground once in the spring as new growth emerges. Apply a balanced, slow-release, granular feed as a top dressing around the plant (4-6 inches out from the base of the plant). Container-grown plants will require additional feedings to maintain vigorous blooming. A diluted, liquid fertilizer like fish emulsion or liquid seaweed works well for replenishing the nutrients in the potting mix. Apply the feed at the manufacturer's recommended dose once every 2-3 weeks from early summer to the end of August.
Vintage Mango Coneflower Spacing
Vintage Mango reaches a compact 2-3 foot height and width. Space plants 20 inches apart when grouping multiple plants in the garden. The dense branching will benefit from extra air circulation. Grow this coneflower in a pot with at least a 12-inch diameter or 2-gallon capacity if planting singly. Vintage Mango Coneflower is also ideal as a thriller element in a larger planter or barrel with at least a 16-inch diameter.
