The stunning blooms of the Vintage Ruby Coneflower look positively jewel-like when they open in midsummer. Also known as Echinacea x Sunmagic Vintage Ruby, this hybrid coneflower develops a mass of flat open flowers in shades of ruby red from July until September. This is a compact cultivar with a height of up to 2 feet.
Originally a native of North America, the Vintage Ruby Coneflower is perfect for attracting bees and butterflies. Exceptionally cold hardy, Vintage Ruby grows well in zones 4 to 9. This coneflower is ideal for providing late summer color and interest to a border or for growing in a container.
Vintage Ruby Coneflower Care
Vintage Ruby Coneflower produces the best flowers when planted in full sun and in well-drained soil. It does not tolerate wet feet, so water only when the top 2 inches of soil are dry and err on the drier side. Fertilizing is not usually necessary. Instead, an annual mulch in spring will help give the plant a boost.
Deadhead as the blooms fade by cutting the bloom stem back to a leaf or new bud, which will encourage new blooms. When dormant in winter, simply cut back all growth to just above ground level to allow new growth to emerge.
Vintage Ruby Coneflower Spacing
Remaining compact, the Vintage Ruby Coneflower grows to around 18 to 24 inches tall and wide. Space plants 18 to 24 inches apart or slightly closer for a denser effect.
