Virtuoso™ Rad Raz™ Dahlia (Dahlia variabilis) produces deep pink double flowers that stand out from early summer until autumn. It typically reaches around 18 to 24 inches in height, offering noticeable color without dominating smaller beds. This selection keeps blooming through heat and humidity, unlike many other annuals that fade in challenging conditions. Many gardeners trust this series for its consistency and reliable display.
The tidy growth habit of this dahlia suits modern landscapes, and deer often leave its foliage alone. This variety, originating from Central America, shows good resistance to common garden pests and diseases. It has low-maintenance needs and is an excellent option for mass plantings, borders, and containers. It also enhances pollinator gardens, where its bright petals attract beneficial insects.
Virtuoso™ Rad Raz™ Dahlia Care
Select a location with full sun for at least six hours a day, and use well-draining soil amended with compost or other organic matter. Water when the top inch of soil starts to dry, avoiding constant sogginess. A balanced, water-soluble fertilizer applied once a month supports strong bud production. Aim for a neutral to slightly acidic soil pH to keep the root system healthy.
Deadhead spent flowers to stimulate new buds, and pinch back tips in early growth to encourage branching. Thinning overcrowded stems helps with airflow, while shearing lightly can maintain shape if the plant becomes too leggy. In colder regions, dig up and store tubers in a cool, dry area to protect them from frost. Container-grown plants benefit from slightly reduced watering in winter, but resume a regular schedule as new growth appears in spring.
Virtuoso™ Rad Raz™ Dahlia Spacing
Space plants 12 to 15 inches apart for good air movement and uninterrupted growth in rows or mass plantings. Closer spacing can yield a denser look but may increase the chance of fungal issues in humid conditions. For container plantings, choose a pot at least 10 to 12 inches wide and deep to accommodate root development. Larger containers offer even more space for tubers to expand and for planting with other companions.
