Volcano Plum Garden Phlox is a high-performing phlox variety with a dense and vigorous form. It puts out masses of fragrant rosy flowers in the summer, which are perfect for cutting. The flower stems are sturdy and never flop under the weight of all those blooms. The medium green pointed leaves look lush and full all summer. This variety stays fairly compact at 24 - 30 inches high.
Volcano Plum is an upright perennial with multiple branches and a spreading habit. This strain will develop drought tolerance and is resistant to powdery mildew, which is a major improvement over the species plant. Plant them in groups to add a wave of color to a perennial bed, hillside, or foundation planting. Mix them with other warm-toned flowering perennials for a beautiful sunset color scheme. They also look fabulous as the ‘thriller’ in mixed container plantings.
Volcano® Plum Garden Phlox Care
This phlox performs best in full sun, but will tolerate partial shade. It adapts to a range of soil conditions, including sandy, clay, and dry soils; note that it does not tolerate standing water. Volcano Plum can withstand drought conditions but looks its best in evenly moist soil over the summer. It is also more tolerant of heat than the species plant, but appreciates some shade in hot climates. Fertilize in spring with an all-purpose formula to boost blooming over the summer.
Cut back the foliage in late fall or winter before new growth emerges in spring. This plant does not require deadheading.
Volcano® Plum Garden Phlox Spacing
If planting in groups, space Volcano Plum approximately 20 inches apart, which will provide good air circulation. Grow them in containers at least 18 inches in diameter, and size up the container every spring to accommodate the spreading rootball.
