Volcano® Plum With White Eye Garden Phlox features an abundance of gorgeous soft purple flowers that stay upright. The Volcano® series of garden phlox was bred for compact growth, avoiding the need for staking even when in full bloom. These plants are perfect for growing in a small garden or in containers on a patio or deck. Although this hybrid was primarily selected for height and spread, it retains the spicy fragrance that phlox is known for.
Volcano® garden phlox is highly resistant to mildew diseases and not choosy about the amount of sun it gets. It will bloom well in full to part sun. This shorter-growing phlox is perfect for the front of a garden bed, adding a hit of color late in the summer. It also works well in a planter filled with brightly colored foliage plants like sweet potato vine and coleus for a stunning display. It blends effortlessly with other pastels and makes a wonderful contrast to lime and bright yellows for a more eclectic look.
Volcano® Plum With White Eye Garden Phlox Care
Phlox is not fussy about soil texture; clay, loam, and sandy locations are fine as long as the drainage is excellent throughout the year. Full sun is the best location for planting, although phlox will grow fine in bright shade. Fertilize phlox annually in late spring with organic compost, diluted liquid seaweed, or fish emulsion to provide plenty of nutrients throughout the growing season. Mulching with organic material like shredded leaves, arborist chips, and compost helps suppress annual weeds while slowly enriching the soil and improving moisture retention.
As growth starts in the spring, pinching out the first flower buds will encourage even more budding later in the summer and will help the plant remain dense. Deadheading and staking are not required for Volcano®, making it a great low-maintenance choice for novice gardeners as well as experienced gardeners. Seasonal dividing of Volcano® phlox will multiply your plant stock and reinvigorate growth.
Volcano® Plum With White Eye Garden Phlox Spacing
Volcano® Plum With White Eye Garden Phlox has a sturdy height of 30 inches and a spread of up to 24 inches. It is best planted 18-20 inches from other plants in the garden. Grow Volcano® phlox in a pot with at least a 12-inch diameter if potting it alone.
