- Use As A Thriller In Containers
Clusters of fiery, red blossoms erupt like a volcano out of the tips of the sturdy 18 to 24 inch stems and contrast well against the dark green foliage on this new phlox cultivar. A low growing, compact plant with a 15 to 18 inch spread it fills in an open space in the perennial bed nicely. This old fashioned cottage garden favorite produces showy, highly fragrant blooms from early July to September.
This low maintenance strain of phlox is highly resistant to powdery mildew, deer and is tolerant of mild drought conditions. It would be an excellent specimen plant in the perennial garden, mass planting or in a pot or container. Although winter-hardy in zones 4 to 9, plants grown in containers or pots would need to be brought indoors in areas where temperatures fall below freezing for extended periods of time.
Volcano® Red Garden Phlox Care
Phlox does best in full sun but will take some shade. It prefers a moist, well-drained soil but is tolerant of a wide range and will grow in average garden soil. It does not like wet areas.
Phlox growing tips can be pinched when the plants are 6 to 8 inches tall to encourage bushier plants with more flower heads. Deadheading is done immediately after flowering to prevent the plant from using its energy to set seed. Large clumps may be divided every 3 to 4 years. Cut stems back to a few inches above the ground in fall and lightly mulch for winter protection. Plants growing in pots or containers would need to be stored inside for the winter.
Volcano® Red Garden Phlox Spacing
Volcano Red should be spaced at a distance of 12 to 15 inches and would do well as a mass planting, walkway planting, accent in the perennial border and in a pot or container.
