Volcano® Ruby Garden Phlox is a colorful, fuss-free perennial and workhorse of the garden. Ruby red blooms appear from late June through late July, on compact, sturdy stems. Bred for high mildew resistance, once established they are very dependable garden performers. In addition to their vibrant color, their light fragrance attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. Volcano® Ruby Garden Phlox grows 28” in height with up to a 24-36” spread. 

Volcano® Ruby Garden Phlox Care

Plant Volcano® Ruby Garden Phlox in a location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight and partial afternoon shade. Space plants to allow for plenty of air circulation around each plant. Volcano® Ruby Garden Phlox will benefit from using a slow-release granular formula when initially planted. When the first flowers fade, apply a balanced, diluted, liquid fertilizer to encourage a second flush of blooms. Incorporating generous amounts of organic matter into the soil, particularly if the soil is lean or sandy, delivers essential nutrients slowly to the roots. Try using peat moss, garden compost, or well-rotted manure.

Water Volcano® Ruby Garden Phlox regularly, ideally in the morning, maintaining moist but not soggy soil. Avoid overhead watering by using drip irrigation or hand watering at the base of the plant to avoid splashing water on the leaves. Deadhead terminal blooms to encourage longer flowering. New flower buds will appear along the stem for a second flush, and they will continue to flower, often up until fall. Divide Volcano Ruby Garden Phlox plants after 3 years.

They are lovely in native plant gardens, in meadows, and naturalized areas. When planted en masse, space plants 24 inches or more on center, to allow adequate airflow and sunlight to reach all sides of the plant.
