Wabi Sabi Viburnum is a showstopper plant. It’s intricately veined leaves, horizontal branching loaded with huge, lacecap flowers reminiscent of white flowered wings of a bird along topped with bright red berries after flowering is just breathtaking! What is particularly special about this plant is it is compact, growing only 2-3 feet tall and 3-4 feet. wide, making it ideal for the smaller landscape unlike its most viburnums that are much larger.
In the spring when the blooms smother the branches with lacecap flowers like a hydrangea, they are covered with pollinators of every shape and size. Then the berries appear, deliciously red and attractive to birds. The combination of flowers and berries make this a fantastic plant for wildlife. Fall leaf color is a deep red brick shade. The shrub is deciduous and loses its leaves in the winter. However, because of its horizontal branching & the berries you have winter interest on this viburnum when snow falls on the branches.
Wabi Sabi Viburnum Care
‘Wabi Sabi’ should be planted in full to part sun with a moist but well-draining soil with a slow release fertilizer for acid loving plants and just average water is needed once established. Like all viburnums, they are deer resistant, insect and disease resistant. Pruning Wabi Sabi Viburnum is not necessary due to the compact size. Feel free to trim off dead branches throughout the year. This plant is hardy from Zone 5a to Zone 8b making it ideal for almost everyone.
Wabi Sabi Viburnum Spacing
This is a plant that can define a border in the landscape, fill a container or use it as a mass planting, creating a sea of white flowers as far as the eye can see in your yard. Space ‘Wabi Sabi’ 4-5 ft. apart if using as a hedge, border or mass planting to insure you can enjoy its branching and flowers. Place it in a container and use it as a focal point on the patio or even in the middle of the garden.
