Watering Mandevilla

Mandevilla prefers damp conditions, but too much water can be fatal. Learning to spot the signs of a dry plant and how frequently to water this vining beauty can ensure it settles in and pushes out abundant blooms. Regular, consistent watering helps the plant create a strong root system that allows this plant to thrive and weather dry conditions.

How To Tell If Mandevilla Needs Watered

Drooping, curling, or discolored leaves are signs of a dry Mandevilla. The foliage will hang limply from the vines, and the plant may not push out flowers if it is too dry. A plant is already dehydrated when it shows signs of water stress. Water dry plants right away, and they will likely bounce back.

How Often To Water Mandevilla

New plants need more water to help establish a robust root system. Water newly planted Mandevilla when the top layer of the soil starts to dry out, but is still slightly damp. Do not water new Mandevilla plants if the ground is wet.

Established Mandevilla plants have high water needs. This plant prefers moist conditions, so water when the top inch of the soil starts to dry out but is still somewhat wet. Mandevilla can survive dry conditions, so don’t worry if you occasionally miss a watering session. As much as Mandevilla appreciates damp conditions, too much water can be harmful. Do not water Mandevilla if the soil is wet.

Potted Mandevilla needs more water than plants grown in the ground. Containers dry out more quickly, so water when the top layer of the soil is barely damp. Drench the soil until excess water drains through the pot. Container-grown Mandevilla will need water daily, depending on the conditions.

Best Time To Water Mandevilla

Water a plant anytime it is showing signs of dehydration. A thirsty plant needs water right away. Mornings are typically the best time to water Mandevilla. Giving the plant a drink first thing will allow the plant to soak up the moisture and be better suited to take on the afternoon heat.

How to Water Mandevilla

Step 1 - Look at the plant for signs of water stress.

You want to look for drooping or wilting foliage or limp, lifeless growth.

Step 2 - Feel the soil near the base of the plant.

Mandevilla needs water when the top layer of soil is barely damp. Do not water Mandevilla if the ground feels wet.

Step 3 - Saturate the soil near the base of the plant.
