Growing Zones
It’s hard not to notice the showy springtime blooms of the Wedding Party® Mother of the Bride Lenten Rose. The 3 inch double flowers have gently pointed petals in an apricot hue with a light pink picotee or margin along the edge. The flowers are complemented by lobed glossy green foliage with serrated edges. This Helleborus hybrid blooms in the early spring, but the foliage will stay in place through the fall.
Lenten Rose is a beautiful addition to borders and mass plantings. Feature this perennial in containers or trim the blooms for cut flowers. This plant is very easy to care for, and pesky animals like deer and rabbits do not favor it, so it’s a dependable option in areas with nuisance animals. The flowers attract pollinators and provide an early food source for bees. This cultivar is a perennial in USDA zones 4 through 9.
Wedding Party® Mother of the Bride Lenten Rose Care
This showy perennial does best in part to full shade. Try to find a protected area so the plant will receive limited light, but also to block the delicate foliage from the wind. Water when the top several inches of the soil dry out, but established plants can be relatively drought-tolerant. Helleborus can adapt to most soil types, but neutral to alkaline soil rich in organic content is ideal. The soil should allow drainage because this plant does not like wet feet.
Lenten Rose is not a heavy feeder when grown in rich soil. Topdressing the soil with organic compost will sustain the plant. Use balanced plant food throughout the growing season if grown in low-quality soil.
Wedding Party® Mother of the Bride Lenten Rose Spacing
The Wedding Party® Mother of the Bride Lenten Rose will grow 18 to 24 inches wide and spread out over a 24-inch space. Space this plant at least 24 inches center to center from neighboring plants, but allow more room when planting near a building.
