Growing Zones
The Wells Special Hinoki Cypress is easy to grow and provides stunning greenery all year. Also known as Chamaecyparis obtusa, this tree-like shrub has an upright, columnar form. Woody branches feature fans of foliage with a scale-like texture. The foliage is a deep green, which is lovely all year, but it particularly stands out in late fall and winter.
The upright form of the Wells Special Hinoki Cypress makes this evergreen an excellent hedge. Add privacy to a patio or backyard, or conceal an unsightly fence with a well-placed row of these upright cypress shrubs. Once acclimated, this is a low-maintenance shrub. Grow the Wells Special Hinoki Cypress as a perennial in zones 5 through 8.
Wells Special Hinoki Cypress Care
Full sun is necessary for the Wells Special Hinoki Cypress to thrive. Plant it in moist but well-drained soil that is neutral to slightly acidic, and water it consistently for the first growing season. Established plants tolerate some drought and only need water during an extended dry spell. Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the shrub to retain moisture. Fertilize young cypress trees in the spring. Test the pH and nutrient levels of the soil, and use a plant food for acid-loving plants if necessary. Established cypress trees only need fertilizer if the soil quality is poor.
Prune the Wells Special Hinoki Cypress to create a more desirable shape during the summer. Remove upper forked branches to maintain a natural, pleasing form. Remove dead or damaged growth as necessary. Plants grown in areas with very cold winter weather will benefit from being wrapped in burlap or outdoor fabric.
Wells Special Hinoki Cypress Spacing
Mature plants reach 10 to 15 feet tall and 5 to 7 feet wide. These shrubs grow upright and narrow, so space them 5 feet apart to create a hedge.
