West Country™ Towering Inferno Lupine, botanically known as Lupinus polyphyllus, lives up to its tall name. Head-turning displays of color and texture appear in early summer and will light the garden on fire! Densely packed, bicolor, orange to deep salmon-red flowers prolifically bloom on this stately perennial.
West Country™ Towering Inferno Lupine is a favorite of hummingbirds and butterflies. It has a straight, upright habit and very sturdy stems that reach heights up to 3 feet with a 2-foot spread. Towering Inferno is both deer and rabbit resistant and hardy in Zones 4-9. It's exceptionally beautiful both in the garden and as a cut flower in stunning arrangements.
West Country™ ‘Towering Inferno’ Lupine Care
Find a spot in your garden where West Country™ Towering Inferno Lupine will receive partial to full sun, at least 4-6 hours or more of sunlight per day. Plant this perennial in slightly acidic soil that is well draining. Adding a bit of sand will help with soil texture and drainage. Plant it in an area that is protected from strong winds.
Deadhead spent flowers to encourage further blooming. If you have rich garden soil, bury the dried seeds after deadheading around the root zone, and new seedlings may appear the following year. Apply a 2” layer of mulch around the plant in spring to help keep roots cool in the early summer and to help retain moisture. Cut back the foliage to a few inches above the soil level after flowering has finished.
West Country™ ‘Towering Inferno’ Lupine Spacing
Use West Country™ Towering Inferno Lupine as a border plant in a cottage/coastal garden. It makes a stunning focal point specimen, and is exceptionally showy when planted in groups. If planting in groups, space plants 18-24 inches apart on center, staggering rows to allow for its mature width.
