Westcountry™ Blossom Lupine brings a softer, romantic palette to the classic lupine silhouette with tall spires of pale pink brushed with creamy white. It grows 24–36 inches tall and about 24 inches wide, forming sturdy, upright clumps that rarely need staking. Part of the Westcountry™ series bred for thicker stems and densely packed florets, it offers fuller bloom spikes and stronger garden performance than many older strains. We especially like it for vertical impact without bold primary colors dominating the border.
The lush green palmate foliage forms a substantial base that supports the dramatic spikes while attracting hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. Deer and rabbits typically avoid Lupinus polyphyllus, making it dependable in high-pressure areas. Excellent as a cut flower, the blooms hold well in arrangements and bring height indoors. Its upright form also makes it a standout thriller in large patio containers.
Westcountry™ Blossom Lupine Care
Plant in full sun to part sun, ensuring at least six hours of light daily for strongest flowering. It performs best in zones 4–9 where summers are not excessively humid, and it benefits from light afternoon shade in hotter climates. Soil must be well-drained and slightly acidic, ideally with a pH between 6.0 and 6.5. Avoid heavy, compacted soils that remain wet, as lupines are sensitive to poor drainage.
Provide consistent moisture during active growth, allowing the surface soil to dry slightly between waterings but never letting roots sit in soggy conditions. Fertilize lightly, as lupines are nitrogen-fixers and can flop in rich soil. Use a low-nitrogen, balanced slow-release fertilizer once in early spring, or top-dress with compost. If growth looks lush but flowering is weak, reduce feeding and check drainage.
Deadhead spent spikes promptly to encourage side shoots and potentially extend the bloom window. After flowering finishes, cut stems back to the base to tidy the plant and direct energy toward root strength. In colder climates, apply winter mulch after the ground freezes to reduce frost heaving. Avoid dividing established plants, as their deep root systems resent disturbance.
Westcountry™ Blossom Lupine Spacing
Space plants 24 inches apart to allow full clump development and airflow. In containers, select a pot at least 14–16 inches wide with excellent drainage.
The glowing peach-pink tones of Westcountry™ Blossom Lupine bridge the gap between cool spring bulbs and brighter summer perennials. Pair with irises and coreopsis for layered late-spring color in cottage-style borders. For a softer perennial mix, combine with catmint and amsonia to highlight the blush tones and extend seasonal interest.
