Westcountry Masterpiece Lupine is a lush perennial that blooms from spring to early summer. It’s perfect for cutting. Of course, it can be left in the garden, too, where it attracts bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. The large, irresistible purple and magenta flowers are kissed with a touch of gold. These early blooming perennials get the garden show on its way for the season.

Westcountry ‘Masterpiece’ lupine (Lupinus polyphyllus) gets 24 to 36 inches tall with a 24 inch spread. It is deer and rabbit resistant and tolerates drought. Lupines bring an upright plant and unusual flower to the garden or a container. In a pot, use Westcountry Masterpiece lupine as a thriller. The green leaves also are attractive.

Westcountry Masterpiece Lupine Care

Lupines need very good drainage and slightly acidic soil. If your soil runs alkaline, consider adding a granular fertilizer labeled for acid-loving plants at planting time. Always read and follow the label directions. Some gardeners plant lupines in a slight mound to help with drainage. Grow Westcountry ‘Masterpiece’ in full sun. Although drought tolerant, lupines do much better when provided with consistent water, especially during hot, dry periods. Remove spent flowers (deadhead) to extend the perennial’s bloom time. When it’s done blooming, cut back to about 6 inches from the ground.

Lupines are short-lived perennials, so plant a few every year to ensure you have these great plants for your garden and for cutting. Lupines are a staple in the cutting garden for early summer bouquets. Allow good air circulation around the plants to reduce the chance of powdery mildew. Also keep an eye open for aphids, which sometimes show up on the flower buds before the open. A good spray from the hose should knock the aphids off of the plant. All parts of the plant are poisonous if ingested.

Westcountry Masterpiece Lupine Spacing

In the landscape, space about 24 inches apart. For the best show, plant in clusters of three to five plants. In a container, use the plant as a spring thriller.
